Cannabis hospitalization: Is there a link to dementia?
People who are hospitalized because of marijuana use are more likely to develop dementia over a five-year period, research shows.
The study, which ran in Jama Neurology, found that individuals in this camp had a 72% higher chance of undergoing dementia-related brain shifts, United Press International reports.
“Individuals with cannabis use severe enough to require hospital-based care were at increased risk of a new dementia diagnosis compared with those with all-cause hospital-based care or the general population,” researchers concluded in their abstract. “These findings have important implications considering increasing cannabis use among older adults.”
